Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to the continuing changes in the shape and size of incandescent light bulbs, creating a lamp that could be used with any light source. The iconic design is based on the same principles as Henningsen’s three-shade system, which ensures soft, pleasant and completely glare-free light, making it the perfect table lamp for the dining room. Initially, the PH 5 was equipped with shades reds and blues to enhance the color of the light, but these were removed in later designs as modern light sources reproduce daylight much more effectively than they did in 1958.
